Halloween Goodies

With Halloween only 10 days away, it’s time to start preparing for the big night. Whether you take your kids trick or treating, or you stay at home, there is plenty to do. This post will help you with ideas and tips to make this Halloween a Fun and Safe holiday for everyone.

On my last Blog post, “Tips for a Safe Coronaween”, we discussed; What the Doctors are saying about Halloween and Covid 19, Trick or Treating Ideas during Covid 19, Indoor Fun activities, Some Halloween Themed Dinner and a Movie ideas, How to throw a Virtual Halloween Party, we shared Virtual Haunted House Tours, Not so Spooky Halloween Playlists, and we gave you links to some Scary  Ghost stories. In case you missed it, here is the link. https://angelikasworld.music.blog/2020/10/02/tips-for-a-safe-coronaween/

Today we will focus on; Pumpkin Carving/painting/decorating, Coloring pages and Printable, Audiobooks, some spooky meals and Treats, and even some Halloween themed not so Scary Movies. I hope you stay with us as we dive into some fun. Let’s begin!

Pumpkin Carving

The first thing we need to make sure of when discussing Pumpkin carving is Safety. Please make sure that the tools you use are age appropriate for your carvers. Most retail and Grocery stores sell pumpkin carving kits like these.

You can pick these up at Walmart stores

Or you can simply use Knives and spoons you have at your house. I am sure there are plenty of Knife options at your home as well. I would suggest that you use a butter knife for the little ones.

Setting up your carving Area

The next part is setting up your Carving area. You want to make sure that you cover the area with one of the following; Plastic throw away tablecloth, Newspaper, trash bag, tarp, or a plastic shower curtain. This is so that all the sticky and wet pumpkin pieces don’t stain your table or floors.

I highly recommend that you have your carvers wear some older clothes that can be stained just in case. I also recommend having a big bowl or bowls for pumpkin seeds and pieces. You might even want to save the seeds for roasting.

Stencils

It’s a good idea to have a stencil when carving with little ones. The stencil makes it easier for them to cut out the design that they want. Here are some cute and easy stencils for printing.

Tips for a Safe Coronaween

With Halloween just 29 days away, Angelika’s World thought that we should share some Tips, Facts, and spooky Fun with you and your Family. We hope to help you and your Family have a safe and plentiful Halloween. With Covid 19 Looming over Halloween this year we are going to have to get Creative with how we Celebrate it this year. Angelika’s World has been Surfing through the Internet, and we found some good Alternatives to the Traditional Trick-or-treating. So, stick around as we explore,” Coronaween”.

First, we need to cover the issue of the virus. We at Angelika’s World want everyone to be able to Celebrate the joys and Spooks of Halloween safely. We have found the latest updates on the Safety of Halloween for the 2020 Season. Here is what we discovered.

What the Doctors are saying

•Don’t share props, toys or bowls. Keep the swords, wands and tiaras from being passed around if you can. Ask each of your children to hold onto their own candy bags.

•Bring hand sanitizer, and practice not touching your face. “

•”Something that you can also do is to put most of the candy away for the first three days (72 hours) that it’s in your home, and then the rest of the candy is safe to eat after the time has passed”.

Here is what the CDC Guidelines are for Halloween this Season.

Many traditional Halloween activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses. There are several safer, alternative ways to participate in Halloween. If you may have COVID-19 or you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, you should not participate in in-person Halloween festivities and should not give out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Lower risk activities

These lower risk activities can be safe alternatives:

•Carving or decorating pumpkins with members of your household and displaying them

•Carving or decorating pumpkins outside, at a safe distance, with neighbors or friends

•Decorating your house, apartment, or living space

•Doing a Halloween scavenger hunt where children are given lists of Halloween-themed things to look for while they walk outdoors from house to house admiring Halloween decorations at a distance

•Having a virtual Halloween costume contest

•Having a Halloween movie night with people you live with

•Having a scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search with your household members in or around your home rather than going house to house

Moderate risk activities

Participating in one-way trick-or-treating where individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for families to grab and go while continuing to social distance (such as at the end of a driveway or at the edge of a yard)

•If you are preparing goodie bags, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 second before and after preparing the bags.

•Having a small group, outdoor, open-air costume parade where people are distanced more than 6 feet apart

•Attending a costume party held outdoors where protective masks are used and people can remain more than 6 feet apart

•A costume mask (such as for Halloween) is not a substitute for a cloth mask. A costume mask should not be used unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers the mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps around the face.

•Do not wear a costume mask over a protective cloth mask because it can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.

•Going to an open-air, one-way, walk-through haunted forest where appropriate mask use is enforced, and people can remain more than 6 feet apart

•If screaming will likely occur, greater distancing is advised. The greater the distance, the lower the risk of spreading a respiratory virus.

•Visiting pumpkin patches or orchards where people use hand sanitizer before touching pumpkins or picking apples, wearing masks is encouraged or enforced, and people are able to maintain social distancing

•Having an outdoor Halloween movie night with local family friends with people spaced at least 6 feet apart

•If screaming will likely occur, greater distancing is advised. The greater the distance, the lower the risk of spreading a respiratory virus.

•Lower your risk by following CDC’s recommendations on hosting gatherings or cook-outs.

Higher risk activities

Avoid these higher risk activities to help prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19:

•Participating in traditional trick-or-treating where treats are handed to children who go door to door

•Having trunk-or-treat where treats are handed out from trunks of cars lined up in large parking lots

•Attending crowded costume parties held indoors

•Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming

•Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household

•Using alcohol or drugs, which can cloud judgement and increase risky behaviors

•Traveling to a rural fall festival that is not in your community if you live in an area with community spread of COVID-19

If you are reading these Guidelines and just not feeling Confident in taking your kids, “Trick-or-Treating. We have some ideas for you. We want you and your Little ones to be safe this Halloween season. Here are some ideas from parents on alternative activities.

                                                                             Safe Trick or Treating Ideas

•Leave a bowl of candy bags (and hand sanitizer) at the end of your driveway, and wave at trick-or-treaters from your front door.

•Drive-by Trick-or-Treating: Gently throw candy at costumed kids in their yards, like your car is a parade float.

•Mail a Halloween Package to your loved ones.

•Hang Halloween treat bags from a tree or clothesline.

•Tape Treat bags to your car for the kids to take.

•Toss candy bags to the kids

•fish net attached to a pole

•use a remote- control car to give the candy out in treat bags

•Tape Halloween treats onto a wooden Skewer and place them around the yard

Indoor Fun

•Set up a piñata for your children in your own yard/Garage/or a spacious room.

•Set up a haunted house for your children at home. They can still dress up and be scared in a fun way.

•Scary movies, ghost stories and more can make the night fun, too. Get out the popcorn, Halloween candy and blankets and find some classics on Netflix.

•Have a Family Game Night – There is nothing more fun to a child than sitting down with their parents at the kitchen table and playing some great games with the family. Pick out the games in advance to ward off any fighting over what is going to be played and have them ready to rock and roll. Place some snacks and chips around the table for everyone to enjoy and start playing.

•Make a Scavenger Hunt – Grab some candy treats and set up a scavenger hunt in your own backyard. Kids can still dress in costumes and experience the joy of candy without having to go door to door.

•For older kids and teens, I would keep it simple. opt for pizza, snacks, and a movie marathon.

•Use some kitchen twine to string your doughnuts from a clothesline or tree. Now give everyone a turn to try to eat the doughnuts with no hands.

•Send Halloween Cards: have them craft some homemade Halloween cards from cardstock, markers, and glue, then mail them off to all their friends.

•Tell Ghost Stories https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/top-13-scary-stories-to-tell-your-kids/

•Mail Halloween boxes to loved ones or have your friends and family do it for your kids. •Pumpkin carving/painting contest   Stencils to print off  https://pumpkinstencils.org/

•Make Pumpkin dioramas (Can be made out of; live, Plastic, and foam pumpkins) printed silhouettes are also used with some.

Hunt the Ghost

Make 7 – 8 cute little ghost-shaped cut-outs using cardboard and paint it white and with round black eyes on it. Hide it in different corners of the house. If hosting an outdoor ghost hunt, place it in the bushes or behind trees. Give easy to follow cues and hints and let the ghost hunt begin.

Jack-O’-Lantern Carving/ Coloring Contest

Knives can hurt the little hands and turn your party into a horror story. Instead of carving, keep pumpkins of different sizes, paints, teeth, and eyeballs and let the kids show their creativity. The winner of the best-carved pumpkin wins a Halloween cookie hamper and those Jack-O’-Lanterns double up as evening decor.

 Halloween Pictionary

Divide players into two teams. If you have a large number of players, you can form four teams, but the game is more fun with fewer teams and more players on each team. Select one person to be your Drawer for the first word. The Drawer is the person who attempts to illustrate the word using the pencil and paper. Everyone else on the team will try to guess the word that the Drawer draws.

Players on the team will take turns acting as the Drawer.

If you only have three players, one person must be designated to draw for both teams during the entire game.

Each team gets a word card, a pad of paper and a pencil

The drawer has 1 minute to draw what is on the card while their team tries to guess it.

The team with the most correct answers wins.

Halloween charades

Gameplay:

1.Divide into teams of two or more players (or you can play as one big group if no one wants to be competitive).

2.Before beginning the game, each team should write about 20–30 words on slips of paper. Fold the pieces of paper and put them into a bowl. Each team draws the words that the other team came up with so that the words won’t be too obvious. Or the host of the gathering or someone who isn’t playing can write down the words beforehand.

3.Determine how long each round will be. Typically, each player gets three to five minutes to act out the word.

4.Decide which team will go first. The first player from that team draws a word from the other team’s bowl.

5.Without speaking, the player must act out the word or phrase. His teammates have to guess what the word is.

6.If the team guesses correctly, they get a point. If the time runs out before the team guesses the word, that player’s turn is over.

7.The other team gets a turn. Each player gets a turn to act out a word. The rotation begins again when everyone has had a turn.

8.Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. You can also play to a certain score, or not keep score at all.

SHREDDED CHICKEN & RICE STUFFED PEPPERS (HALLOWEEN STYLE)

Stuffed Peppers

•4 bell peppers your choice of color •2 cups Mexican rice (CLICK FOR RECIPE)  https://www.everydayjenny.com/mexican-rice/

•1 shredded chicken breast from the above recipe

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

•1 can black beans rinsed and drained

Bring a large pot of water to boil.  While you are waiting for the water to boil, rinse peppers, slice off the tops and hollow out the insides, be sure to remove any seeds and the white part inside. If desired, use a small paring knife to cut out a jack-o-lantern face. When water is boiling, put the peppers and tops in and allow to cook for about 5 minutes until peppers are tender.  Remove from water and set aside to cool.  Mix the cooked rice, shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, and black beans together in a large bowl.  Fill each pepper with the chicken and rice mixture and top with extra cheese, if desired. Replace pepper top back on top. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until cheese is melted and pepper is done to desired tenderness.  Alternately, once peppers are stuffed, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate, when ready to cook, preheat oven to 350, remove plastic wrap and bake for 1 hour.

Throw a Virtual Halloween Party

A virtual Halloween party is a holiday party held via video conferencing software. These occasions are great opportunities for remote teammates to gather, socialize, and celebrate the season.

Zoom is a great free option available https://zoom.us/pricing

Watch streaming media with friends https://getmetastream.com/

  • Start a session and invite your friends by sharing your friend code with them.
  • Browse for your favorite media and add the URL to the queue. A number of popular websites are already supported for playback.
  • New features are added on top of streaming websites such as real-time chat and timestamp markers.

Virtual Haunted House Tours

Haunted houses are a staple of Halloween entertainment. Though you and your remote team may not be able to physically tour an abandoned mansion or take a frightening hayride together, you can still give your group goosebumps with a virtual haunted house experience.

Ötzi the Iceman, 3,300 BCE old mummy discovered by German tourists in Italian alps On this day in 1991

“Living links to the Iceman have now been revealed by a new DNA study. Gene researchers looking at unusual markers on the Iceman’s male sex chromosome report that they have uncovered at least 19 genetic relatives of Ötzi in Austria’s Tyrol region.

The match was made from samples of 3,700 anonymous blood donors in a study led by Walther Parson at Innsbruck Medical University. Sharing a rare mutation known as G-L91, “the Iceman and those 19 share a common ancestor, who may have lived 10,000 to 12,000 years ago,” Parson said.

The finding supports previous research suggesting that Ötzi and his ancestors were of farming stock. The study used Y-chromosome markers that are passed from father to son to trace the Neolithic migrations that brought farming to Europe via the Alps. Ötzi belonged to a Y-chromosome group called haplogroup G, which is rooted, like farming, in the Middle East.

The study’s overall results fit the idea that the changes of the Neolithic Revolution spurred people westward into the Tyrol region, Parson said.

He is nevertheless wary of any suggestion that Ötzi’s distant relatives might be a chip off the old block, either physically or in their liking for simple grain porridge”. (National Geographic)

John Baur and Mark Summers (aka Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy) created this international day in 1995. He created the holiday while playing racquetball on June 6, 1995—the 51st anniversary of the invasion of Normandy. Out of respect to the battle’s veterans, a new observance date was quickly sought.

A CHIPMUNK CHRISTMAS Album

When I was a little girl, my Father would play this Album every Christmas season. It took me 10 Years to track it down and find where it could be purchased. My Husband bought me the Album and a Record player for my Birthday. After hooking the record player up to my computer, we were able to make a digital recording. I then made a video of the Album playing and added picture to match the story. I hope you enjoy the end result. To watch and hear this Album please please click the link below.

Rembrandt originally spelled Rembrant, (born July 15, 1606, Leiden, Netherlands—died October 4, 1669, Amsterdam), Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, possessing an exceptional ability to render people in their various moods and dramatic guises. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty. July 11th through History

Today is Saturday July 11th. I scoured the internet to find interesting facts and events that occurred on this day from as far back as 1859 to 2009. I hope these facts and events make you smile and help you learn something you might not have known. So here we go!

We start with 1859. In 1859, Big Ben, the great bell inside the famous London clock tower, chimed for the first time.We will show you a Picture from 1859 and even a historical video about Big Ben.

1955 – U.S.A. ‘In God We Trust’

1955 : President Eisenhower signed a bill requiring use of the inscription ‘In God We Trust’ on all paper money. “On this day in 1956, two years after pushing to have the phrase “under God” inserted into the pledge of allegiance, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a law officially declaring “In God We Trust” to be the nation’s official motto. The law, P.L. 84-140, also mandated that the phrase be printed on all American paper currency. The phrase had been placed on U.S. coins since the Civil War when, according to the historical association of the United States Treasury, religious sentiment reached a peak. Eisenhower’s treasury secretary, George Humphrey, had suggested adding the phrase to paper currency as well.

Although some historical accounts claim Eisenhower was raised a Jehovah’s Witness, most presidential scholars now believe his family was Mennonite. Either way, Eisenhower abandoned his family’s religion before entering the Army, and took the unusual step of being baptized relatively late in his adult life as a Presbyterian. The baptism took place in 1953, barely a year into his first term as president.

Although Eisenhower embraced religion, biographers insist he never intended to force his beliefs on anyone. In fact, the chapel-like structure near where he and his wife Mamie are buried on the grounds of his presidential library is called the “Place of Meditation” and is intentionally inter-denominational. At a Flag Day speech in 1954, he elaborated on his feelings about the place of religion in public life when he discussed why he had wanted to include “under God” in the pledge of allegiance: “In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country’s most powerful resource in peace and war.”

The first paper money with the phrase “In God We Trust” was not printed until 1957. Since then, religious and secular groups have argued over the appropriateness and constitutionality of a motto that mentions “God,” considering the founding father’s dedication to maintaining the separation of church and state”.(History) https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/president-eisenhower-signs-in-god-we-trust-into-law

July 12, 1962: The Day Information Went Global

“Telstar was launched by NASA on July 10, 1962, from Cape Canaveral, Fla., and was the first privately sponsored space-faring mission. Two days later, it relayed the world’s first transatlantic television signal, from Andover Earth Station, Maine, to the Pleumeur-Bodou Telecom Center, Brittany, France.

Developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories for AT&T, Telstar was the world’s first active communications satellite and the world’s first commercial payload in space. It demonstrated the feasibility of transmitting information via satellite, gained experience in satellite tracking and studied the effect of Van Allen radiation belts on satellite design. The satellite was spin-stabilized to maintain its desired orientation in space. Power to its onboard equipment was provided by a solar array, in conjunction with a battery back-up system.

Although operational for only a few months and relaying television signals of a brief duration, Telstar immediately captured the imagination of the world. The first images, those of President John F. Kennedy and of singer Yves Montand from France, along with clips of sporting events, images of the American flag waving in the breeze and a still image of Mount Rushmore, were precursors of the global communications that today are mostly taken for granted.

Telstar operated in a low-Earth orbit and was tracked by the ground stations in Maine and France. Each ground station had a large microwave antenna mounted on bearings, to permit tracking the satellite during the approximately half-hour period of each orbit when it was overhead. The signals from Telstar were received and amplified by a low-noise “maser” (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation), the predecessor of the modern laser. After demonstrating the feasibility of the concept, subsequent communications satellites adopted a much higher orbit, at 22,300 miles above the Earth, at which the satellite’s speed matched the Earth’s rotation and thus appeared fixed in the sky. During the course of its operational lifespan, Telstar 1 facilitated over 400 telephone, telegraph, facsimile and television transmissions. It operated until November 1962, when its on-board electronics failed due to the effects of radiation”. (NASA) https://www.nasa.gov/topics/technology/features/telstar.html

1962- The Telstar satellite, the first active communications satellite, is launched by AT&T, inspiring the Tornadoes’ instrumental hit of the same name later that year.

The Newlywed Game – ABC – August 7, 1969

1969- David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”

David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” single is rush-released to beat the moon landing, which happens nine days later.

1996- The night before a show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Smashing Pumpkins touring keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin dies at age 34 after shooting heroin with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who is fired from the band a few days later (he returns to the fold in 1999). The Sarah McLachlan song “Angel” is inspired by Melvoin’s death.

2009- “Boom Boom Pow,” after spending 12 weeks at #1, is replaced by another Black Eyed Peas song, “I Gotta Feelin’.”

Things I’ve learned in Quarantine

First off, I want to apologize for not posting in the past few months. I was in a bad place Mentally. This Covid 19 has really took it’s tole on me. You see, I am a Social Butterfly in Real Life. So naturally, when I was told i couldn’t go out, I got a touch of the Depression. I tried to cheer myself up by posting as many upbeat Blog ideas as I could gather. After a while, it became harder to find Topics that wouldn’t bum people out. It crushed me that I couldn’t give you all something to Smile at and look forward to. So, I thought that I should just lay low for a while until I had something that would take your minds off of Reality. Seeing as though most of the Country is having more spikes of Covid, we could all use some relief. So, I have decided that I will post at least 1 thing a day, that will make us Smile, even if for just a minute. Please keep coming back to see what I have dug up for us all.

“I’ve learned how to appreciate the little things in life and look at the bright side.”

“I’ve realized that I’m a bit of a procrastinator.”

“I’ve learned just how quickly I can clean my whole house (30 minutes).”

“I Learned that Older movies and TV shows are more my thing.”

” I learned that Super Mario Bros is way harder when you are 40.”

” I have learned how to change my dinner ideas in an instant based on what the store has in stock.”

” I also learned that spending all day with the Family, can make you Crazy! LOL”

“But above all, I learned that I do truly Love my Family.”

That’s what I have learned so far. I hope it made you Smile just a little. Leave a Comment with what you have learned thus far. Till tomorrow, Be safe and stay Unique!

Things we forget to Clean

Hello! Welcome to my World! Today we will be going over things in the house that we seldom clean, but should be cleaning more often. I hope you will find this informative and helpful. So let’s begin.

We are all human. Being human, we tend to forget things. I am definitely guilty! I always forget to clean my brooms.  Even though we forget these places that need cleaning, they still need to get done. So, here is my list of Commonly forgotten cleaning areas and items.

Here is a list of items that we really need to stop procrastinating over and just clean them.

Refrigerator:

Toss old containers and expired food, and wipe everything down with multipurpose spray. Soak drawers in warm water and scrub them clean with dish soap.

Ice cube trays

Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals take care of excess food waste in a pinch, but they can also be prone to mold, decay, and clogs. Give them some attention every week by turning on the hot water, pouring a solution of equal parts vinegar and baking soda down the drain, and running the disposal for at least 1 full minute.

Maintenance Tip – Garbage disposal cleaning using lemon.

Garbage Disposal Dos and Don’ts

The Vacuum

This is probably the last place anyone would think to clean. When really it should be the first thing that you clean. when you vacuum, you are picking up debris and dust from your floors. You should be emptying the vacuum accordingly and wiping it out at the same time. This will prevent the debris from accidentally shooting back out onto the floor.

Please be sure you read the Owners manual for your Vacuum before taking it apart or cleaning.

Iron

The soleplate of an iron should be cleaned whenever there is obvious residue on it or it no longer glides smoothly.

Disclaimer

As always, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your particular iron. If you’ve misplaced the owner’s manual, check if the online version is available on the manufacturer’s website.

For sticky spots:

“Believe it or not, newspaper makes a great iron cleaner. (You can also use paper towels or a dry cotton towel.)

Start by turning the iron on to the highest setting (do not use steam) and run the hot, dry iron across the paper towel until it’s clean. If extra abrasion is needed, sprinkle a tablespoon of salt on top of a newspaper and repeat. To rinse off residue, run the iron over a damp, clean towel after it cools.

To remove oily substances:

To remove oil from the soleplate, unplug the iron and allow it to cool. Wipe the entire soleplate with a cloth dipped in distilled white vinegar. Rinse with a damp cloth. If oily spots remain, wipe with a cloth dipped in ammonia. Rinse with a damp cloth. Dry completely.

To remove stains:

To remove mineral deposits from the soleplate, apply a paste of baking soda and water to the affected areas and scrub with a damp cloth. Wipe clean with a wet cloth.

To remove mineral deposits from vent openings, scrub the vents using a cotton swab and some baking soda paste. Wipe clean with a wet cotton swab.

If the iron is leaving brown water spots on clothes when using steam, that means it’s time to clean the reservoir. Empty the reservoir completely and refill with 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar and 3/4 cup distilled water. Turn the iron to full steam and run it back and forth over an old towel until the reservoir is empty. If the iron has a spray option, spray until the water no longer appears miscolored. Refill the reservoir with distilled water and repeat to make sure all mineral residue is gone.

To prevent future stains and mineral buildup, use only distilled water (it doesn’t contain any dissolved minerals) and completely empty the reservoir before storing the iron”. (Today) https://www.today.com/home/how-often-clean-iron-right-way-do-it-t118942#anchor-strongForstickyspotsstrong

Picture Frames

Whether they’re hanging or standing, picture frames are sneaky dust collectors. Every 1-2 weeks, use a feather duster to clear excess dirt from the surfaces. Be especially careful with gilded or textured frames. Using anything other than a gentle duster might damage the delicate finish. Metal frames, on the other hand, can be wiped down with harsher soaps.

Curtains

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLEAN YOUR CURTAINS?

Curtains naturally attract dust and absorb odors over time. It is recommended to clean your curtains every 3 to 6 months. Having your curtains cleaned on a regular basis is a good idea to keep your house fresh and clean.

WHEN WILL A CURTAIN REQUIRE MORE FREQUENT CLEANING?

While cleaning your curtains every 3 to 6 months should be appropriate for most household requirements, we would recommend more frequent cleaning if the following factors play a role in your home:

Allergies

Curtains can trap a variety of common allergens including dust, pollen, mold spores, pet hair and dander. If you or a family member suffers from allergies, regular curtain and carpet cleaning should be a crucial part of your household routine.

Smoking

Smoke particles from cigarettes, cigars and pipes are easily trapped in curtains fabric. If you don’t want to make your curtains yellow or have a strong smell of smoke in your house, make sure you let plenty of fresh air in and clean your curtains every month if possible.

You live near the sea

If you live near the sea and specially if you have sea views, salt is not your best friend. Salty sea air can affect curtains as well as the windowpanes. Hard wearing curtain fabrics are your best choice under these circumstances, and frequent cleaning is a must. (Mr. Time Saver) https://mrtimesaver.nl/often-cleaning-curtain-care/

Pillows

How often you should wash your Pillows

Pillows, especially, should be washed at least two to four times a year (say, every four months) to help them last longer.

How to Wash Down and Fiberfill Pillows in the Washer

You’re in luck: Most down and fiberfill pillows are machine-friendly, which means you can just toss them in the washing machine for a refresh. Be sure to wash two pillows at a time to keep the washer balanced, ensuring an all-around clean. While any washing machine will do, front- or top-loading machines without an agitator (a.k.a. the large spindle in the middle of some machines) is your best bet. If an agitator-style top loader is your only option, place the pillows in the tub vertically to lessen the chance of them getting damaged by the agitator.

It goes without saying that you should always read your pillow’s care label and follow the directions accordingly. If you clipped off the tag or can’t find the instructions, use this step-by-step as your guide:

  1. Select the gentle cycle and use warm water, then add on an extra cold water rinse and spin cycle.
  2. Add a small amount of detergent, such as Good Housekeeping Seal star Tide.
  3. Tumble the pillows dry on low heat, fluffing and turning them often. To help keep pillows plump, toss in a few dryer balls from Nellie’s. Remember: Since pillows take longer to dry than a normal load of clothes, musty smells may arise. In that case, set pillows in the sun for a few hours to get rid of the stench.

How to Wash Foam Pillows

Unfortunately, you can’t put your latex or memory foam pillows straight in the washing machine. While foam pillows are resistant to dust mites, it’s still important to clean them on a regular basis. As always, you should check the washing instructions on the pillow’s tag, or follow Forte’s cleaning method outlined here:

  1. Remove pillow covers or pillowcases and wash according to the care tag. If you cut off the care tag, stick the pillowcases and covers in the washing machine, select the normal or casual cycle, and use hot water. Add detergent, such as Good Housekeeping Seal star Tide.
  2. To get rid of dust or dirt on the pillow, vacuum both sides, or tumble in the dryer on the no-heat or air-only cycle for 20 minutes.
  3. Spot clean any soiled areas with a cloth dipped in a mild sudsy soap solution. Lightly rinse with a damp cloth. (FYI, wet foam tears easily, so be gentle with the water and soap solution.)
  4. Allow the pillow to air dry completely before putting it back on the bed or couch.

Window sills and Window tracks

It’s easy to tell when your windows are dirty, but windowsills and tracks often go unnoticed. Dust away any loose dirt and dead bugs (or use a vacuum with a brush attachment). Use a spray bottle of white vinegar to spray the area and let it sit for a minute. Wipe with paper towels and use Q-Tips for those hard-to-reach areas.

Kitchen Drawers and Cabinets

It’s probably a good idea to keep the places you store all your food and dishes clean, right? Empty them out (preferably one at a time to avoid unnecessary clutter), toss expired food, and wipe everything down.

Soap scum and mildew stains are haunting your shower curtain, but it doesn’t take long to clean them.

How Often Should I Wash My Plastic Shower Curtain?

Probably more often than you think. After all, you come face to face with your shower curtain or plastic liner on an almost daily basis. Ideally, you should be washing it once a month. At the very least, however, you should aim to clean your plastic shower curtain once every three months. When you think about it, four to 12 times a year isn’t really that often and the process shouldn’t take long at all now that you know how to wash a shower curtain.

Keep in mind that washing a shower curtain will help keep it free of soap scum, but mildew is another story. If you’ve noticed mildew on your shower curtain—be it plastic or cloth—don’t fret.

How to Wash a Shower Curtain

Method 1 — The Washing Machine: Wash your shower curtain in the washer using warm water combined with vinegar, baking soda or gentle laundry detergent. Note: Pick one of the three cleaners listed above. Do not use all three at once. You don’t want to cause a science experiment volcano or a nasty chemical reaction in your washing machine. Afterwards, hang your clean shower curtain back on the shower rod to dry.

Method 2—Handwashing: You can also wash your plastic shower curtain using baking soda and a microfiber cloth. Dampen the cloth and then sprinkle some baking soda on it. You’ll use this cleaning solution to scrub the entire shower curtain. After scrubbing, rinse with warm water and revisit any patches of soap scum or hard water stains that are left with the cloth and baking soda. Rinse again until you have a clean shower curtain. This process also leaves a nice fresh scent in the bathroom.

Remove Mold From Shower Curtain Naturally

place the shower curtain onto the bottom of the tub and give it a good sponge bath.

Pre-soak the sponge and shower liner with either hydrogen peroxide or white distilled vinegar (if you can handle the smell of the vinegar) and get scrubbing!

You can do the same with hydrogen-peroxide and get similar results without the odor.

pay more attention to the creases and lower third of the liner to ensure that you get it all.

Don’t forget to get in-between the folds and seams of the shower liner. Many liners have metal eyelets that will need some scrubbing where the liner meets the edge of the eyelet.

Sometimes, the soap-scum buildup is more difficult to get rid of than the mold and mildew. Either way, it’s all gotta go because the soap-scum buildup (cellulose material) is what the mold is feeding on.

After your shower curtain is mold and mildew free, you can hang the shower liner to air-dry or toss in the dryer (on low/gentle settings) with a few towels mixed in to protect the curtain from damage.

How Often Should You Wash Your Bathmats?

Sure, your bathmat probably feels nice and soft on your feet after every shower, but underneath all that comfort may be some pretty gnarly grime and not-so-nice germs.

Determine how much use your bathmat gets – The condition of your bathmat really comes down to how much you use it.

  • If you’re like most people, you are using it daily. If you share a bathroom with more than one person you then you have to factor in their daily usage in addition to yours.
  • You also need to consider the time in between each use where your bathmat can dry and air out. The more it is used and the less time it has to dry the more likely your bathmat has unseen dirt, germs, and even mold or mildew settling in!

Wash your bathmats accordingly – This answer to how often you should wash your bathmats can be subjective and a bit complicated. To make things simple, a good rule of thumb is to wash your bathmat at least once per week.

  • If you find yourself in a household that shares a bathroom between two or more people, then we suggest washing your bath mats every 3 to 5 days.
  • If you have your own bathroom, you may be able to get away with washing your bathmats about every 10 days to prevent mold or mildew build up underneath the fabric.

Minimize long-term moisture – It’s important to create an environment that allows your bathmats to fully dry.

  • Turn on your bathroom’s fan or open a window during and after showers. Why? Because adding a little ventilation to your bathroom helps cut down on the steam buildup, which can seep into both soft (bathmats) and hard surfaces, making your bathroom a tropical paradise for mold spores, bacteria, and other unpleasant things.
  • When you are done using your bathmat, hang it up! Exposing both sides of the bathmat to the light of day will help it dry more quickly and reduce the risk of mold and mildew.

Over time grease, soap scum and food debris build up in dishwashers. Not only does this provide a breeding ground for germs, it also reduces the efficiency of the appliance. According to house-maintenance expert Bob Vila, you should clean your dishwasher filter and drain once a month. Fortunately, his three-step process is easy to do and doesn’t require any special tools.

You have no idea how many people have touched it or done unspeakable things with those coins and bills, after all, so you probably handle that cash with the knowledge that you’re going to want to wash your hands or work through a wallet cleaning checklist soon. However, it’s not the dirtiest item in your wallet!

Credit cards and Debit cards are. You use them almost every day, probably without thinking of how many times you touch them and how few times you’ve actually cleaned them. One in 10 bank cards were contaminated with fecal matter, according to a 2012 study. Wipe the card with a damp cloth or anti-bacterial wipe, then gently scrub the magnetic strip with an eraser.

If you can’t remove the cover however, you can still attempt a cycle in the washing machine—just be sure to choose the delicate setting. Plug the Holes

Many bath toys, especially ones that squirt water or squeak, have holes in the bottom which can be a target for water to enter and mold to grow. Place a dab of hot glue on these toys before placing them in the bath and you’ll create a water-proof seal on the toy.

Proper Bath Toy Storage

To prevent mold from forming in the first place, create a healthy environment for storing your child’s bath toys. Consider investing in a tray or rack that will allow the water to drain from the toys, leaving them close to an open window for proper ventilation or using fans and vents to disperse leftover steam from the bath. Anything that dries the toys out will help prevent mold from forming.

Even if you know all the ins and outs of how to clean baby bath toys, sometimes that gunk still won’t go away. When that happens, simply throw them out. It’s better for your kids to play with new toys than anything that can get them sick.
