Today Pluto the Planet was Discovered!

Pluto Day

On this day February 18th in 1930, The planet Pluto was Discovered. US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto while working at at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. Tombaugh used a one-of-a-kind telescope, nicknamed the “T4” in this planet discovery. Read on to learn more about this Great Astronomer and the Now categorized Dwarf Planet Pluto.

Clyde Tombaugh

Facts about Clyde Tombaugh

In 1928, the amateur astronomer was offered a job at Lowell Observatory in Arizona, where he discovered Pluto.

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.

In 1934, he married Patricia Edson. They had two children, Annette and Alden.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in astronomy from the University of Kansas, working at the observatory during the summers.

Tombaugh remained at Lowell Observatory until the advent of World War II, when he was called into service teaching navigation to the U.S. Navy at Arizona State College.

After the war concluded, he worked at the ballistics research laboratory at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

“A one-of-a-kind telescope, nicknamed the “T4,” that hasn’t been used since the 1960s will soon be on permanent display at the White Sands Missile Range Museum Missile Park.

The telescope’s New Mexico journey begins in 1948 when a Telescope IV, commonly referred to as T-4, was shipped from the Ballistic Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, to Mule Peak located at about 7,000 feet and not too far from Alamogordo.

A year earlier, the U.S. Forest Service granted a special-use-permit to White Sands Providing Ground(AKA White Sands Missile Range), authorizing the Army to use Mule Peak for installing experimental instruments, as well as installing shelters and constructing an access road in support of obtaining ballistic measurements on guided missile testing.

The T-4 — one of five newly developed tracking telescopes belonging to astronomer Clyde Tombaugh’s Optical Measurements Branch at WSMR — was used to track most missile tests fired from WSMR, beginning with the V-2 rocket.

The T-1 through T-4 telescopes were built upon air defense anti-aircraft gun mounts. The T-4 telescope uses a 90mm M2 gun mount, with the barrel of the gun still present, although capped. Only one of its kind was ever built.

The three basic telescope designs use different optics to achieve the same result: making distant objects look bigger and brighter than they appear to your eye. See the text for links to animations that show how light passes through the optics of each design.

Refractors have a lens at the front of the tube — it’s the type you’re probably most familiar with. While generally low maintenance, they quickly get expensive as the aperture increases. In refractor lingo, an apochromat offers better optical quality (and is more expensive) than an achromat of the same size. Watch an animation of light passing through a refractor.

Reflectors gather light using a mirror at the rear of the main tube. For a given aperture, these are generally the least expensive type, but you’ll need to adjust the optical alignment every now and then — more often if you bump it around a lot — but that adjustment (called collimation) is straightforward. Watch an animation of light passing through a reflector.

Compound (or catadioptric) telescopes, which use a combination of lenses and mirrors, offer compact tubes and relatively light weight; two popular designs you’ll often see are called Schmidt-Cassegrains and Maksutov-Cassegrains.

The T-4 telescope has not been used since the 1960s, although the crew shelter and other structures were utilized into the 1980s. Bill Godby, archaeologist with the Garrison Cultural Resources Program, spearheaded efforts to have the telescope removed and brought back to WSMR Museum as an outdoor display to be created recognizing Clyde Tombaugh and his efforts. Tombaugh worked at WSMR from 1946 to 1955, and also taught astronomy at New Mexico State University from 1955 until his retirement in 1973. He discovered Pluto in 1930, the first object to be discovered in what would later be identified as the Kuiper belt. In 1980 he was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame”. What Is a Planet?

This seemingly simple question doesn’t have a simple answer. Everyone knows that Earth, Mars and Jupiter are planets. But both Pluto and Ceres were once considered planets until new discoveries triggered scientific debate about how to best describe them—a vigorous debate that continues to this day. The most recent definition of a planet was adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 2006.

The New Definition of Planet

The IAU (International Astronomical Union) therefore resolves that planets and other bodies, except satellites, in our Solar System be defined into three distinct categories in the following way:

A planet is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

A “dwarf planet” is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

All other objects, except satellites, orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as “Small Solar System Bodies”. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/in-depth/

Just for Fun Videos that have Pluto

I hope you have enjoyed this Post about Pluto. I know that it was quiet Educational. I learned a lot that I hadn’t heard about the Dwarf Planet. If you liked this Post, please

Random Acts of Kindness Challenge

Quoted from Plato

February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day

We can all agree that Receiving a random act of kindness feels good. This Act makes you feel valued, loved, and appreciated. Kindness has a kind of power that warms the heart and makes us feel alive. It gives us a sense of perspective and purpose that are completely unmatched by anything else. Acts of kindness can spread like wildfire. People know this and yet, in today’s society, we forget to be kind. We get so caught up in our own lives; that we don’t see others in a kind way. Does this make us Bad people? Not necessarily, but it does make us closed off to our fellow man. The truth of the matter is, there are people around us, that may need an Act of Kindness to keep them going. You could Save a Life with one simple Act of Kindness. Now is the Time to Act!

What is a Random Act of Kindness?

A random act of kindness is a small display of thoughtfulness, empathy, or love aimed toward another person. A random act of kindness is an unexpected act of charity or helpfulness and is often done for a stranger. It is a non-premeditated, inconsistent action designed to offer kindness towards the outside world. Someone who performs a random act of kindness expects nothing in return. Often, the person who performs the random act of kindness does not even see the reaction of the person who receives the kindness.

The term random act of kindness was coined in 1982 by Anne Herbert, who wrote a book by the same name in 1993. The full, original phrase is random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. Her expression was an attempt to counteract the phrase random acts of violence and senseless acts of cruelty. https://www.amazon.com/Random-Kindness-Senseless-Acts-Beauty/dp/161332023X

“Kindness is the language which the Deaf can hear and the Blind can see.” — Mark Twain

“How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.”—George Washington Carver

Whats special about Feb.15th?

February 15, 2020 is the 46th day of the year 2020 in the Gregorian calendar. There are 320 days remaining until the end of the year. The day of the week is Saturday. But what makes this day so special? Keep reading to find out.

On this day in 1903 the 1st Teddy Bear was introduced to America. The Teddy Bear was made by Morris & Rose Michtom. Morris and Rose were inspired by an Article(Washington Post on Sunday, November 16, 1902) written about a Hunting trip that Theodore Roosevelt took. “Theodore Roosevelt was on a bear hunting trip near Onward, Mississippi on November 14, 1902. Mississippi’s Governor Andrew H. Longino had invited him, but unlike other hunters in the group, Theodore had not located a single bear.

Roosevelt’s assistants, led by Holt Collier, a born slave and former Confederate cavalryman, cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree. They summoned Roosevelt and suggested that he shoot it. Viewing this as extremely unsportsmanlike, Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear. The news of this event spread quickly through newspaper articles across the country. The articles recounted the story of the president who refused to shoot a bear. However, it was not just any president, it was Theodore Roosevelt the big game hunter! Clifford Berryman, a political cartoonist, read the article and decided to lightheartedly satirize the president’s refusal to shoot the bear. Berryman’s cartoon appeared in the Washington Post on November 16, 1902.

Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn candy shop owner, saw the cartoon and had an idea. He and his wife Rose also made stuffed animals, and Michtom decided to create a stuffed toy bear and dedicate it to the president who refused to shoot a bear. He called it ‘Teddy’s Bear‘. After receiving Roosevelt’s permission to use his name, Michtom mass produced the toy bears which were so popular that he soon founded the Ideal Toy Company. To this day the Teddy Bear has worldwide popularity and its origin can be traced back to Theodore’s fateful hunting trip in 1902” (National Park service).https://www.nps.gov/thrb/learn/historyculture/storyofteddybear.htm

“Vintage Twenties Teddy Bear

Price: From 79 cents

Description This Teddy Bear is from an advert from 1920. Named after the United States President Theodore Roosevelt (whose nickname was “Teddy”) following a cartoon where he refused to kill a tied up beaten black bear (1902). The following year, Morris Michtom (Ideal Novelty and Toy Co) wrote to the president asking for permission to market a (Teddy Bear) and was given permission, the rest as they say is history. However, there are disputes over the first “Teddy Bear” as it is believed that the Steiff firm in Germany, unaware of Michtom’s bear, produced a stuffed bear from Richard Steiff’s designs at around the same time”(The People History). http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/20stoys.html

Annoy Squidward Day (Sponge Bob Square Pants)

Annoy Squidward Day is a holiday that is mentioned in the episode “Employee of the Month,” as part of a joke. It is first shown on a calendar and is marked with Squidward’s face. It is supposedly held annually on February 15. Squidward is bothered, so when he is asked what day it is today, he answers, “Annoy Squidward Day?” SpongeBob laughs and says that “Annoy Squidward Day” is on this day and points to the calendar. It is really the day Mr. Krabs announces the Employee of the Month Award.

National Gumdrop Day

Today is National Gumdrop day. National Gumdrop Day is dedicated to a cone-shaped, gelatin-based candy, the gumdrop. They are fruit or spice flavored, and sugar coated.

Gumdrop Fun Facts

Coining of the phrase “Goody gumdrops” in the 1950s.

Gumdrop also came to be used as a slang term for sweetness or a sweetheart.

Originally, gumdrops were flavored with spices: orange(clove), yellow(allspice), red(cinnamon), green(spearmint), purple(anise), white (wintergreen or peppermint), and black(licorice).

The most popular gumdrop flavors are cherry, grape, orange, lemon, and spice flavors like clove, cinnamon, mint, and anise(licorice)

The NASA Apollo Command modules were nicknamed “Gumdrops” because of its conical shape. https://www.space.com/36240-apollo-9-lunar-module-test-flight-photos/2.html

The Command Module Gumdrop is hoisted aboard the U.S.S. Guadalcanal after the 10-day Apollo 9 mission in Earth orbit, 13 March 1969. Image credit: NASA.

On the fourth day of the 10-day Apollo 9 Earth-orbital mission, during an extravehicular activity, astronaut Russell L. Schweickart, lunar module pilot, uses a 70mm Hasselblad camera. The two modules — “Spider” and “Gumdrop” — are docked. Schweickart dons an Extravehicular Mobility Unit in “golden slippers” on Spider’s porch, with, only partially visible, a Portable Life Support System and an Oxygen Purge System on his back. During the EVA, Astronaut James A. McDivitt, Apollo 9 commander, waits inside the “Spider”. Astronaut David R. Scott, command module pilot, sits at “Gumdrops'” controls. http://spaceflighthistory.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-martian-adventure-gumdrops-on-mars.html

The classic board game, Candy Land, features both a Gumdrop Pass and a Gumdrop Mountain. https://www.toyhalloffame.org/toys/candy-land

Candy accounts for only 6% of the added sugar in the American diet. Soft drinks and juice account for 46%.

Branch’s Candy holds the world record for largest gumdrop which weighted in a little larger than 10 lbs. If you had eaten it, you would have consumed 15,127 calories.

National Hippo Day

Hippopotamuses, known as hippos, are celebrated today.

Amazing Facts About the Hippopotamus

  • The name Hippopotamus comes from the Ancient Greek ‘river horse’. http://wordcentral.com/cgi-bin/student?hippopotamus
  • Hippos bask on the shoreline and secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is a skin moistener and sunblock that may also provide protection against germs. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/h/hippopotamus/
  • An adult Hippo needs to resurface every 3 – 5 mins to breathe. The process of surfacing and breathing is automatic, and even a hippo sleeping underwater will rise and breathe without waking.
  • They are only territorial while in the water. Both reproduction and birth occur in the water. Hippo calves weigh approximately 45 kg(99 pounds) at birth and can suckle on land or underwater by closing their ears and nostrils. Each female has only one calf every two years. Soon after birth, mother and young join schools that provide some protection against crocodiles, lions, and hyenas.
  • Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun most humans. Hippos have been clocked at 30 km/h (18 miles per hour) over short distances.
  • Hippos will travel on land for up to 10km (6 miles) to feed. They spend four to five hours grazing and can consume 68 kg (149 pounds) of grass each night. Considering their enormous size, a hippo’s food intake is relatively low.
  • The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. However, if threatened on land it will often run for water.
  • Their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.
  • The IUCN classified the Hippo as having vulnerable status in 2008. The population is in decline; most dramatically in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

World Pangolin Day

What is a pangolin?

Though many think of them as reptiles, pangolins are actually mammals. They are the only mammals wholly-covered in scales and they use those scales to protect themselves from predators in the wild. If under threat, a pangolin will immediately curl into a tight ball and will use their sharp-scaled tails to defend themselves.

2. What do pangolins eat?

Pangolins eat ants, termites and larvae and are often known as “the scaly anteater.” Because they have no teeth, pangolins pick up food with their sticky tongues, which can sometimes reach lengths greater than the animal’s body.

3. The most trafficked mammal in the world?

They certainly are one of the most trafficked mammals in Asia and, increasingly, Africa. Pangolins are in high demand in countries like China and Vietnam. Their meat is considered a delicacy and pangolin scales are used in traditional medicine and folk remedies. All eight pangolin species are protected under national and international laws. But there is still growing international illegal trade in pangolins.

Based on reported seizures between 2011 and 2013, an estimated 116,990-233,980 pangolins were killed, which represents only the tip of the trade. Experts believe that seizures represent as little as 10 percent of the actual volume in pangolins in illegal wildlife trade.

4. Is there any good news for pangolins?

Yes! In 2016, a treaty of over 180 governments announced an agreement that would end all legal trade of pangolins and further protect the species from extinction. However, illegal trade of the species continues. WWF, together with TRAFFIC, works to protect species from wildlife crime. In Asia, we work to reduce consumer demand for illegal wildlife products with campaigns and partnerships with governments and businesses.

5. What can I do to help pangolins?

Wildlife crime is the greatest threat to pangolin. You can help by Joining the “Stop wildlife Crime Campaign at the following website. https://support.worldwildlife.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=664&_ga=2.202880209.131001997.1581715080-1559603849.1581715080

Whales are in the species known as, Cetacean. Cetacean (order Cetacea) is defined as; any member of an entirely aquatic group of mammals commonly known as whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

The ancient Greeks recognized that cetaceans breathe air, give birth to live young, produce milk, and have hair—all features of mammals. Because of their body form, however, cetaceans were commonly grouped with the fishes. Cetaceans are entirely carnivorous, although members of the order Sirenia (manatees, dugongs, and Steller’s sea cow) were once referred to as the “herbivorous Cetacea.” In the past cetaceans were important resources (see whaling), but by the end of the 20th century their economic importance was almost solely due to whale watching, a tourist activity and major source of income for certain coastal regions of many countries. https://www.britannica.com/animal/cetacean

There are two types of whale; Baleen and Toothed. The key difference between them is the way they feed and what they have inside their mouth.

Baleen whales have baleen plates, or sheets, which sieve prey from seawater. Toothed whales have teeth and they actively hunt fish, squid and other sea creatures. Dolphins and porpoises all have teeth and rather confusingly are known as ‘toothed whales’ too!

Another obvious difference between baleen and toothed whales is the number of blowholes on top of their head; baleen whales have two whereas toothed whales have one. There are only 14 baleen whale species and they are generally larger than the 76 species of toothed whales – except for the mighty sperm whale, the largest toothed whale.

You can help these beautiful creatures by adopting ($50.00) or donating. https://adopt-us.whales.org/whale-adoption-project/

If you like having your nails done, head out to the local spa and do a mani-pedi, or get a facial. If you work out a lot, sign up for a massage. Take yourself shopping for a nice outfit you can wear on the town with your friends. Buy that video game set you’ve been eyeing. If you are feeling brave, order flowers to be sent to yourself at the office. You don’t have to say who they are from!

Go out with your single friends: No one should be alone on Valentine’s day. Just because it’s generally for people who are ‘in love’, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with a good group of people. Take your single friends out to a karaoke bar and sing your heart out. Nothing feels better than being out with good people who understand you. Being single gives you the opportunity to build great relationships with your friends. You have more time to do so when you are single – so give it a go!

Family Night is Necessary

When I was growing up, my family was a religious household (Mormon) that focused on keeping the family close. We were taught that family comes first. We were told that you do for family before you do for others. We had a set day of the week that we would all gather together and do an activity. This was a required gathering. My Parents believed that these nights were crucial to keeping the family unit strong. We would use these nights to get to know each better through; games, movies, outings, and even dinners. These were the nights that were to be free from arguments, discussions on bad behavior, and sibling fighting. These nights were designed to be Fun and loving. I hated them when I was a Teenager. I saw them as a forced event that kept me from doing what I wanted with my friends. Now that I am older and a parent, I have come to realize that these nights are essential. They bring the Family together and provide a feeling of Safety. They are also a Supportive environment. I try to use my Family nights to strengthen the bonds with my Family. I use the nights to get to know each other better through Discussions and Play. They are used to build Trust for one another. I also see Family night as a way, to make memories, tackle issues before they get out of hand, and to let them know you support them. Connecting with each other is Necessary to ensure proper growth for those we Love.

All Things Valentines Day

Well, its that time of your again. The time that we all run to the store and fumble through the Valentines aisle and try to pick out something we think our loved one will like. We second guess ourselves on the right stuffed animal, the perfect combination of Chocolates, and the best-looking bouquet of roses that our wallets can afford. We frantically call all the babysitters we know, in hopes that they will watch the kids. Then it’s pondering the right Romantic atmosphere. Should we go out for dinner in a crowded and loud restaurant or should we attempt to cook the perfect dinner at home. Should we book a Room at the motel in the next town, or should we save the money and buy them something grand with it? Yes, it is Valentine’s day. The one day that men and women stress out the most. Relax and breathe, I got you covered. Sit back and read my post. I promise you; it will help you decide the perfect night for your loved one. First, we will see why we celebrate this holiday in the first place.

Valentine’s Day Facts

  • Every year, more than 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolates are sold across the country.
  • Sorry men, it looks like you’ll be spending twice as much as women this year on gifts. The average man spends $130 on Valentine’s Day, while women spend about $70.
  • Don’t forget about your pets! Every year, around 9 million people buy their pets a Valentine’s Day gift.
  • February 14th is the second largest card giving day of the year, just after Christmas. This year, it’s expected that 1 billion cards will be exchanged around the world.
  • Teachers receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by kids, mothers, wives and girlfriends.
  • Hallmark was one of the first to mass produce a Valentine’s Day card, all the way back in 1913.

More than one-third of men are comfortable not receiving anything from a lover on Valentine’s Day. (1800Flowers)https://www.1800flowers.com/blog/flower-facts/valentines-day-fun-facts-2017/

  • During the 1700s in England, a girl would pin four bay leaves to her pillow and eat a hard-boiled egg, including the shell, on the eve of St. Valentine’s Day. Supposedly, if she dreamed of a boy that night, she would soon marry him. Girls would also write boys’ names on small pieces of paper, cover them with clay, and drop them into the water. When the clay broke, the papers floated to the top. The first name the girls could read would predict whom they would marry.
  • In Germany, girls would plant onions in a pot on Valentine’s Day, and next to the onions, they placed the name of a boy. They believed they would marry the boy whose name was nearest the first onion to grow.
  • Traditionally, young girls in the U.S. and the U.K. believed they could tell what type of man they would marry depending on the type of bird they saw first on Valentine’s Day. If they saw a blackbird, they would marry a clergyman, a robin redbreast indicated a sailor, and a goldfinch indicated a rich man. A sparrow meant they would marry a farmer, a bluebird indicated a happy man, and a crossbill meant an argumentative man. If they saw a dove, they would marry a good man, but seeing a woodpecker meant they would not marry at all.
  • The first American Valentine was produced in 1834 by New York engraver Robert Elton.
  • On this day in 1849, the first American-made valentines were sold in Worcester. They were designed and made by Esther Howland, the daughter of a local stationer. After graduating from Mt. Holyoke College, she returned to Worcester and began making valentines modeled on a fancy one she had received from an English friend. Her brother took the samples on a sales trip and came home with an astonishing $5,000 worth of orders. Howland began by hiring her friends to assemble the valentines; within a few years, she built her business into a $100,000 a year enterprise, a notable success for any entrepreneur but a truly remarkable accomplishment for a nineteenth-century woman.
  • The condom company Durex reports that condom sales are 20-30% higher around Valentine’s Day.

Flowers

Most woman expect Flowers for valentine’s day. Men assume that they must bought expensive roses for the occasion. This is not the case. Yes, Roses are nice to buy for your loved one. However, they are not the only Flower that represents Love.

Flower Meanings and Symbolism

It seems like common knowledge that roses symbolize love, but have you ever wondered where flower meanings come from? Using flowers symbolically dates back to before the nineteenth century, but it wasn’t until the nineteenth century that floriography became formalized. In 1809, Joseph Hammer-Purgstall published Dictionnaire du language des fleurs, the first published list on the language of flowers.

Though floriography was popularized in Europe, it was inspired by women of the Ottoman Empire who used flowers to convey messages that they could not say aloud. In fact, Greek and Armenian women helped Hammer-Purgstall understand the language of flowers and translate traditional Turkish sayings into French. Flower symbolism became even more elaborate in 1819 when Louise Cortambert wrote Le langage des Fleurs, a dictionary on the language of flowers. The rise of flower symbolism during this time makes sense, as it was the height of the Romantic era where nature was seen as beauty, and people were heavily influenced by their emotions. Floriography allowed for a tangible exchange of these emotions. (FTD) https://www.ftd.com/blog/flower-meanings-and-symbolism#

How to Keep Fresh Cut Roses Alive?

Apple Cider Vinegar & Sugar —  Flowers need sugar as food. Sugar is a substantial ingredient in flower food packets. The problem is, sugar accelerates bacterial growth. And you get those gunky, slimy leaves around day 4 to prove it. The solution is to add an acid. Enter vinegar, the bacteria-fighting agent to combat any damage the sugar creates.

Every night before hitting the hay, we put this vase of flowers in the fridge. They were typically in there for about eight hours. When we woke up, we took the flowers out and displayed them with the others on the dining room table. It seems such a simple solution, but it kept our flowers fresh well through day 7. It makes sense that florists keep their flowers inside a large refrigerator.

Though anchored in science, many of the theories only have an inkling of truth to them. Your best bet to keep your flowers alive longer is using the flower food packet that comes with your arrangement and placing them in the fridge overnight. https://blog.teleflora.com/keep-cut-flowers-fresh/#

Put Cut Flowers in the Refrigerator

  • Nobody is marveling at the beauty of your bouquets overnight, so stick them in the refrigerator! Like putting your fruits and veggies in the fridge keeps them fresher longer, the same goes for your flowers. Think about it – florists tend to store their flowers in large fridges, so why wouldn’t the same concept work for you? Clean out an area of your fridge and keep your bouquet fresh for up to four days longer than a non-treated bouquet!

Drop A Penny in the Flower Vase

  • Copper is a known antibacterial agent, and the bacteria that multiplies in the water is a contributor to the breakdown of cut flowers. Simply putting a penny in the vase protects the flowers from some of the bacteria, keeping them fresh for longer. Pairing this method with the refrigerator, your flowers will stay fresher for days.

Don’t Place Cut Flowers in Direct Sunlight

  • While your flowers need a little bit of sunlight, we tend to overestimate how much is necessary. They aren’t actively growing anymore, so sunlight isn’t as beneficial as it is when the flowers are still rooted in the ground. When you have cut flowers, their needs change – with temperature being a much bigger factor. For example, putting your flowers on a windowsill with direct sunlight tends to be hot. As you can deduce from the fact that your fridge keeps your flowers fresh, supplying them with extra heat won’t. Not only will this sun make the water deplete quicker, but it can even cause the vibrant colors on the petals fade as well. You should keep your bouquet away from heating vents too and away from the fruit that you keep on the counter – the gases released from the fruit can cause some flowers to wilt quicker.

Maintain Your Cut Flowers

  • Something as simple as trimming the stems every couple of days can go a long way. This takes off the dying ends of the flowers, so they can absorb more water. Be sure to cut them diagonally. In addition, you should also change the water daily or every other day, depending on the state of the flowers. Use lukewarm water for regular flowers, but cold water for bulb flowers. Sterilize the vase between fills as well. If you have a variety bouquet, like A Little Pink Me Up, there’s a good chance that some of the flowers will die earlier than others. If this is the case, remove the dead ones and pick out the leaves that have fallen into the water. Eliminating these from the bouquet will limit the amount of bacteria in the water.

Don’t Use the Entire Flower Food Packet

  • If your bouquet came with a packet of food, don’t use it all at once. Every time you change the water, sprinkle a little bit more in. This flower food typically consists of sugar, an acidifier, and bleach. If your bouquet didn’t come with flower food, never fear! You can make your own with a little sugar, citrus juice, and bleach.

Just a little maintenance will keep your flowers looking brand new, letting you enjoy them for more days that you could have imagined!

12 Days till Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving only 12 days away, I thought we should do a post with some helpful tips. These tips were collected around the web. I hope that these aide you in your Thanksgiving endeavors.

“While frozen, a turkey is safe indefinitely. As soon as it begins to thaw, bacteria that may have been present before freezing will begin to grow again. There are three safe ways to defrost a turkey: in the refrigerator, in cold water, and in a microwave oven.” (USDA) We will examine these methods so that you can see which one works best for you.

The USDA recommends thawing your turkey in the refrigerator. This is the safest method because the turkey will thaw at a consistent, safe temperature. This method takes some time, so allow one day for each 4 – 5 pounds of weight. If your turkey weighs 16 pounds, it will take about four days to thaw. Once thawed, the turkey is safe for another two days, so you can start thawing it six days before thanksgiving (the Friday before Thanksgiving).

The other two methods (cold water and microwave) must be done immediately before you start cooking the turkey, so you’ll have to wait until Thanksgiving morning.

Cold Water Thawing

For the cold water method, leave the turkey in its original wrapping and submerge it in a sink (or container) full of cold water. It is important that the water be cold so that the turkey stays at a safe temperature. You should change the water every 30 minutes. Empty out the water and replace it with fresh cold water. With this method, allow 30 minutes of defrosting time per pound, so a 16 pound turkey will take 8 hours to thaw using this method (so you might need to start around 4 a.m. if you want to eat in the afternoon!). Once the turkey has thawed, cook it immediately.

Microwave Thawing

Before you commit to thawing your turkey in the microwave, check your owner’s manual for the size turkey that will fit in your microwave oven, the minutes per pound and the power level to use when thawing a turkey. Remove all outside wrapping and place the turkey on a microwave-safe dish to catch any juices that may leak. Use the defrost function based on weight. As a general rule, allow 6 minutes per pound when thawing a turkey in the microwave. Be sure to rotate it several times, and even flip it, during the thawing process.

If the turkey starts to actually cook instead of just defrost, let it rest for 5 minutes or so before you resume thawing. Partway through thawing you may wish to cover the tips of the wings and drumsticks with a small piece of foil to shield them from the microwaves and keep them from cooking. Once the turkey has thawed you should cook it immediately.

Spice your Turkey

There are many Flavor combinations that can be used to make a Delicious Turkey. I scanned the Internet and found a few that are supposed to be superb. Hopefully one of these helps you liven up your Turkey.

Daylight Savings/National Sandwich Day

Today we will be discussing November 3rd Holidays. The two I have chosen are; Daylight Savings time and National Sandwich day. Hope they teach you something you didn’t know.

“Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 a.m. — which is the official hour to set all of our clocks back to standard time. But most of us will probably “fall back” before we go to bed Saturday night. On the bright side, we gain an extra hour of sleep.

Not all States participate in Daylight saving Time. Presently, Hawaii and Arizona are the only two U.S. states that do not observe daylight saving time. Neither do the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and Northern Marina Islands.

Daylight Saving Time is now used in over 70 countries worldwide and affects over one billion people every year. The beginning and end dates vary from one country to another” (USA Today).https://www.usatoday.com/news/

10 Things You Might Not Know About Daylight Saving Time

1. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WAS HALF JOKING WHEN HE SUGGESTED IT.

More than a century before Daylight Saving Time (DST) was adopted by any major country, Benjamin Franklin proposed a similar concept in a satirical essay. In a piece called “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light,” published in The Journal of Paris in 1784, he argued:

All the difficulty will be in the first two or three days; after which the reformation will be as natural and easy as the present irregularity […] Oblige a man to rise at four in the morning, and it is more than probable he will go willingly to bed at eight in the evening; and, having had eight hours sleep, he will rise more willingly at four in the morning following.

In one prophetic passage, he pitched the idea as a money-saver (though at the time people would have been conserving candle wax rather than electricity). To enforce the out-there plan, Franklin suggested taxing shutters, rationing candles, banning non-emergency coach travel after dark, and firing cannons at sunrise to rouse late-sleepers. While his essay clearly brought up some practical points, Franklin may have originally written it as an excuse to poke fun at the French for being lazy. He wrote that the amount of sunlight that goes wasted each morning would likely come as a shock to readers who “have never seen any signs of sunshine before noon.”

2. OFFICIAL CREDIT FOR THE IDEA GOES TO A BUG COLLECTOR.

The first serious case for DST came from a peculiar place. While working at a post office by day, an entomologist named George Vernon Hudson, who did most of his bug hunting at night, soon became frustrated by how early the sun set during the summer months. He reasoned that springing the clocks forward would allow more daylight for bug collecting—along with other evening activities. The clocks could be switched back in the winter when people (and bugs) were less likely to be found outdoors.

When the idea was proposed to a scientific society in New Zealand in 1895 it was panned for being pointless and overly complicated. Just two decades later, Daylight Saving Time would begin its spread across the developed world.

3. WWI PUSHED DAYLIGHT SAVING INTO LAW.

In 1916, Germany became the first country to officially adopt Daylight Saving Time. It was born out of an effort to conserve coal during World War I, and Britain, along with many other European nations, was quick to follow the Germans’ lead. It wasn’t until 1918 that the time change spread to the U.S. A year after entering the war, America began practicing DST as an electricity-saving measure. Most countries, including the U.S., ceased nationwide observation of the switch following wartime. Until, that is …

4. IT GAINED RENEWED POPULARITY DURING THE ENERGY CRISIS.

Although it was already being practiced in many states, the U.S. reconsidered nationwide DST in the 1970s, when, once again, the argument pivoted back to energy conservation. The oil embargo of 1973 had kicked off a nationwide energy crisis and the government was looking for ways to reduce public consumption. Year-round Daylight Saving Time was imposed in the beginning of 1974 to save energy in the winter months. Not everyone was enthusiastic about the change: Some of the harshest critics were parents suddenly forced to send their children to school before sunrise.

5. IT MAY ACTUALLY BE AN ENERGY WASTER.

Despite Daylight Saving Time’s origins as an energy saving strategy, research suggests it might actually be hurting the cause. One 2008 study conducted in Indiana found that the statewide implementation of DST two years earlier had boosted overall energy consumption by one percent. While it’s true that changing the clocks can save residents money on lighting, the cost of heating and air conditioning tends to go up. That extra hour of daylight is only beneficial when people are willing to go outside to enjoy it.

6. IT’S ALSO A HEALTH HAZARD.

Even if DST was good for your energy bill, that wouldn’t negate the adverse impact it can have on human health. Numerous studies show that the extra hour of sleep we lose by springing ahead can affect us in dangerous ways. An increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and susceptibility to illness have all been linked to the time change.

7. BUT THERE ARE SOME BENEFITS.

Though people love to complain about it, Daylight Saving Time isn’t all bad news. One notable benefit of the change is a decrease in crime. According to one study published in 2015, daily incidents of robbery dropped by seven percent following the start of DST in the spring. This number was heavily skewed by a 27 percent dip in robberies during the well-lit evening hours.

8. IT’S NOT OBSERVED NATIONWIDE.

DST has been widely accepted across the country, but it’s still not mandated by federal law. U.S. residents resistant to springing forward and falling back each year might consider moving to Arizona. The state isn’t exactly desperate for extra sunlight, so every spring they skip the time jump. This leaves the Navajo Nation, which does observe the change, in a peculiar situation. The reservation is fully located within Arizona, and the smaller Hopi reservation is fully located within the Navajo Nation. The Hopi ignores DST like the rest of Arizona, making the Navajo Nation a Daylight Saving doughnut of sorts, suspended one hour in the future for half the year.

9. IT STARTS AT 2 A.M. FOR A REASON.

Daylight Saving Time doesn’t begin at the stroke of midnight like you might expect it to. Rather, the time change is delayed until most people (hopefully) aren’t awake to notice it. By waiting until two in the morning to give or take an hour, the idea is that most workers with early shifts will still be in bed and most bars and restaurants will already be closed.

10. THE CANDY INDUSTRY LOBBIED FOR AN EXTENSION.

Until recently, losing an hour of daylight in the fall presented a problem for the candy industry. That’s because Daylight Saving Time traditionally ended on the last Sunday in October, a.k.a. before Halloween night. Intense lobbying to push back the date went on for decades. According to one report, candy lobbyists even went so far as to place tiny candy pumpkins on the seats of everyone in the Senate in 1986. A law extending DST into November finally went into effect in 2007”(Mental Floss).http://mentalfloss.com/article/93066/10-things-you-might-not-know-about-daylight-saving-time

National Sandwich Day

“The sandwich might be the perfect food: portable, open to any interpretation and as simple or as elaborate as the mood permits. The sandwich has a long history, but it hasn’t always been as embraced in America as it is now. It’s hard to imagine, but the sandwich was once thought of as a symbol of a colonial past that most patriotic Americans wanted to forget.

The sandwich as we know it was popularized in England in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it, and most food historians agree, that Montagu had a substantial gambling problem that led him to spend hours on end at the card table. During a particularly long binge, he asked the house cook to bring him something he could eat without getting up from his seat, and the sandwich was born. Montagu enjoyed his meat and bread so much that he ate it constantly, and as the concoction grew popular in London society circles it also took on the Earl’s name.

Of course, John Montagu (or rather, his nameless cook) was hardly the first person to think of putting fillings between slices of bread. In fact, we know exactly where Montagu first got the idea for his creation. Montagu traveled abroad to the Mediterranean, where Turkish and Greek mezze platters were served. Dips, cheeses, and meats were all “sandwiched” between and on layers of bread.

In all likelihood Montagu took inspiration from these when he sat at that card table. Montagu’s creation took off immediately. Just a few months later, a man named Edward Gibbon mentioned the sandwich by name in a diary entry, writing that he’d seen “twenty or thirty of the first men of the kingdom” in a restaurant eating them.

By the Revolutionary War, the sandwich was well established in England. You would expect American colonists to have taken to the sandwich as well, but there’s no early written record of them in the new country at all, until a sandwich recipe didn’t appear in an American cookbook until 1815.

Why would this creation go unsung in the nation for so long? It seems early American cooks tended to avoid culinary trends from their former ruling state. And the name “sandwich” itself comes from the British peerage system, something that most Americans wanted to forget. Once memory faded and the sandwich appeared, the most popular version wasn’t ham or turkey, but tongue! Of course, most Americans today wouldn’t dream of eating a tongue sandwich. But that’s ok, since we’ve come up with some pretty excellent sandwich ideas since then  (History).

That iconic New Orleans sandwich, the Po’ Boy.  The original Po’ Boy was filled with breaded fried oysters or shrimp. Common variations include soft shell crab, catfish and crawfish, spicy Louisiana sausage such as andouille, fried chicken and shredded seasoned beef (Fork and Plate). https://forknplate.com/2015/08/12/po-boy/##targetText=The%20original%20Po’%20Boy%20was,chicken%20and%20shredded%20seasoned%20beef.

The Po Boy came about in the Great Depression during a streetcar worker strike. Two brothers, once streetcar operators themselves, owned a sandwich shop nearby, and promised to feed any down-on-his-luck striking worker for free.” Some 1,100 streetcar workers striked in New Orleans on July 1, 1929, spurring the creation of the po’ boy sandwich by local sandwich shop owners and one-time streetcar men. “Whenever we saw one of the striking men coming,” Bennie Martin later recalled, “one of us would say, ‘Here comes another poor boy.’” Martin and his brother Clovis fed any striker who showed up” (Peoples World).https://www.peoplesworld.org/article/today-in-labor-history-streetcar-strike-births-po-boy-sandwich/
